U.S.-Payroll Expatriates on a Residential Assignment: Please note that you're eligible to use the 2nd.MD service, however the added $400 claim cost described below doesn't apply to Global Choice Plan participants. However, when you repatriate to the United States, this will apply to you depending on the Chevron medical plan you choose. That's why it's still important for you to know about this change.

In fact, we feel so strongly about the benefits of getting a second medical opinion that we request that you seek a second opinion through 2nd.MD — the new Health Decision Support Program administrator — prior to receiving any of the four medical procedures (on a non-emergency basis) listed below. If you decline to use the service for these four procedures, that’s your choice. But by doing so, you will be responsible for an additional $400 added to your total claim cost for the procedure, whether or not you’ve met the deductible.

  • Knee surgery
  • Hip surgery
  • Back surgery
  • Spine surgery

Of course, 2nd.MD is available for second medical opinions about more than just these four procedures.

Why these procedures?

These procedures frequently have alternate treatment options before resorting to surgery. It’s also a field in which new technology and approaches are being developed regularly. These procedures also require an extended recovery period.

The second medical opinion service is free to eligible employees enrolled in a Chevron medical plan. It’s always your decision whether to follow the second opinion, or stay the course on your original treatment plan. We simply are asking that you seek a second opinion through the 2nd.MD service to help you make informed decisions about your care before your knee, hip, back or spine procedure. This requirement currently will only apply to eligible employees enrolled in the Chevron Medical PPO Plan, the Chevron HDHP and the Chevron HDHP Basic. Medical HMO Plan participants do not need to seek a second opinion through the Health Decision Support Program prior to receiving knee, hip, back or spine surgery at this time. And remember, the second opinion service is available to seek a second opinion on any diagnosis you may be facing, not just for knee, hip, back and spine surgeries.

Getting a Second Opinion is Easy

Our intention is to make getting this second opinion as easy as possible.

  • Contact a 2nd.MD Nurse to request a consultation through any of these methods:
  • Answer questions and sign a consent form so 2nd.MD can collect the necessary records and work with experts in the field to review your case.
  • Typically, within three business days, you’ll be given an appointment to speak with an expert physician. That’s right, you’ll actually get to speak to a physician and ask as many questions as you’d like about your procedure or diagnosis.
  • You don’t have to travel or go to an office for this advice. All second opinion medical consultations are conducted by phone or through a video conference on your computer, at a time that’s convenient for you.

If you are not connected to the Chevron intranet or this is your first time to use Benefits Connection, automatic sign-in is not available. Please login with your password PIN. If you don't know your PIN or can't find it, you can request a new one in two ways:

  1. Online. Go to the Benefits Connection login screen and choose Forgot Your PIN. If you've set up challenge questions, you will be able to access the website instantly after successfully answering the questions. Otherwise you'll have to use the mail option. It can take up to two weeks to have a new PIN mailed to you.
  2. By Phone. Call the HR Service Center. When prompted to enter your PIN, hold on the line until the system provides you with other options regarding your access. You can request that a new PIN be mailed to you. It can take up to two weeks to receive your PIN in the mail.
